INTERGENERATIONAL PEACEMAKING
MISSION-STUDY TRIP

Trip to Korea

June 12–28, 2026

Trip participants will learn about the history and present reality of colonization, trauma, and ongoing conflict in Korea, with particular attention paid to the impact of American imperial and military forces on the lives of ordinary Korean people. We will connect with local leaders who are working to build peace and heal political and military divisions. We will also hear the stories of organizers and activists who are working to ease the suffering of marginalized groups like women and LGBTQIA+ folks in the church. Our intergenerational group will not just learn from others. We will also be actively working for peace by building open and resilient community amongst our members, of many different ages and backgrounds.

Participants will:

  • Explore the historical and ongoing role of the United States in the Korean Peninsula, particularly during and after the Korean War (1950–1953).

  • Gain first-hand knowledge of the current U.S. military presence in Korea and its impact on Korean society.

  • Connect with Korean congregations, grassroots organizations, and advocacy groups working on issues of peace, reunification, and justice for marginalized communities including LGBTQIA+ Christians and women.

  • Experience the natural beauty of Korea, witness vital expressions of community in that context, and savor the rich history and culture of its people.

  • Consider how our own lives in the United States might be connected to the conflict and consequences of imperialism that are evident in Korea.

  • Reflect on opportunities and challenges for peacebuilding in their own settings, including across the generations in our own community.

  • In preparation for the trip, participants will also be expected to engage with books, movies, and other media to gain a foundation for understanding the history and perspectives we will be encountering.

The group will visit Seoul, Jeju, the DMZ, and Pyeongtaek. Some highlights will include:

Exact locations subject to change.

Local leadership will be provided by Rev. Hyeyoung Lee and Rev. Kurt Esslinger, who currently serve as Global Ecumenical Liaisons (formerly mission co-workers) overseeing ministries of the PC(USA) in Korea and across Asia and the Pacific. Their 10+ years of ministry and relationship-building mean that we will be able to connect with a vast network of local leaders and peacemakers across Korea. We will also have the opportunity to support their witness and work on behalf of our Presbyterian community by connecting with local queer activists and their allies, and by participating in international peacemaking events through the Border Peace School.
