Friday, June 20 – Sunday, June 22
Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church
728 W. Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94087
This event is open to the public, and is for anyone who cares about justice and peace.
Are you troubled by the hostile rhetoric of world leaders and the violent conflicts that threaten nations and ethnic groups? Does the blatant exploitation of poor and working-class folks by billionaires and economic systems break your heart? Do you sometimes feel powerless and hopeless in the face of all the dehumanization and division?
Peacemaking in community — building genuine relationships with those around us — can be a way to start imagining and working toward a more just and sustainable world.
Come join people from all faiths and walks of life to talk about building peace where we live. We’ll hear from people actively engaged in peacemaking work in Ireland and Korea, regions that have known deep division. Rev. Hardy Kim will guide us through presentations, panel discussions, and breakout conversations with inspiring leaders with inspiring leaders Rev. Bill Shaw, Dr. Dong Jin Kim, Rev. Hyeyoung Lee, and Mr. Paul Kyumin Lee.

Friday Dinner & Opening Panel Discussion (6 pm)

Friday Evening Plenary (7:30 pm)
The Current Situation in Korea
Over the past few months we’ve seen extraordinary events take place in Korea - especially with a popular uprising that has led to the impeachment of a president. Our panel will give us additional insight into what is happening in Korea, and help us better understand the possibilities for peace there.
Saturday Morning Sessions (9:15 am–noon)
Partnering with Women in Korea - Rev. Hyeyoung Lee
Rev. Lee represents the Presbyterian Church (USA) to our partner organizations in Korea. Her work has a special focus on supporting women’s organizations, and she can offer us important perspectives on how the longstanding U.S. military and political presence in Korea has harmed women there. Rev. Lee will also speak about the changing understanding of how U.S. based faith leaders should engage in ministry with folks in places like Korea.
Building Peace in a Divided City — Rev. Bill Shaw
Thirty years ago Rev. Bill Shaw was sent by his Presbyterian leadership to a Catholic neighborhood in a divided North Belfast. The story of his ministry is one of seeing past prejudice and of meeting people beyond the assumptions our official histories and traditions build up in us. Hear how he’s worked to build up a trusted network of community support, and a bright light of hope for folks in his underserved community.
Saturday Lunch & Table Conversations (12 noon–1:30 pm)
Informal conversations with fellow attendees and panelsts.
Saturday Afternoon Session & Panel Discussion (1:45–3:30 pm)
Building Peace Between People — Dr. Dong Jin Kim and Mr. Paul Kyumin Lee
News stories about conflicts or about peace agreements tend to focus on countries, nations, administrations, militaries, or other massive entities. The stories of real people—those who suffer and have to live with the everyday consequences of conflict or peace—these stories get lost or are never even heard in the first place. Dr. Kim has been studying things that make for peace in the context of both Ireland and Korea, through Hanshin University, Korea and Trinity College, Dublin. Mr. Lee is pursuing a doctorate in peace studies at University of Notre Dame, after having prepared to serve in the U.S. State Department. They will lead a conversation challenging some of our traditional thinking about how we can achieve peace for our societies, and that might offer some new ways for us to actively engage in building peace ourselves.
Sunday worship & reception (10–11:45 am)
The capstone of the weekend will be a special worship service at Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church, with conference speakers helping to lead us in worship. An informal reception will follow in Trinity Court.
