"The Stories We Tell"

People and communities evolve from and are sustained by stories. The stories we tell, pass down, and remember shape who we are, what we believe, what values we sustain, and whom we welcome or turn away.

Today, the speed at which stories are created and spread challenges how we make sense of the world. Many of us live in isolated information silos which offer little curiosity about how others think and feel. Each silo tells its own stories and these competing narratives swirl around us, leaving many of us disoriented and unsure.

At a time when misinformation machines reign, we must ask: What stories are we telling and amplifying? Are these stories that build bridges or deepen polarization? Do they challenge narratives that maintain an unjust status quo and/or have us longing for a past that was only partially just? Or do we tell stories that remind us of each other's humanity and awaken us to possibility?

As Christians, what stories are we sharing — if any? About the church, the Gospel, our convictions? Are we speaking with clarity and courage, or have we gone silent?

Join us for an honest, hopeful conversation about the narratives that shape us — and the ones we might help create for a more connected future.

2026 Speaker

Jessica Vazquez Torres

Jessica Vazquez Torres has been a transformative force in the realms of antiracism, anti-oppression, and cultural competency for over 25 years. As an effective communicator and critical thinker, Jessica is passionately committed to dismantling the structures and cultural dynamics that oppress and harm People of Color, Queer, and immigrant communities.

When she's not facilitating workshops, coaching individuals, or tackling seemingly unsolvable problems, Jessica embarks on a quest to master the art of bread baking. She builds a vibrant community with her spouse, Laura, enjoys playful moments with her dog, Magpie, and immerses herself in a multitude of books and podcasts. Jessica also takes leisurely walks (sometimes for exercise) and sings with full abandon, even if off-key.
